When precision is the priority, static calibration is the method of choice. This process is carried out in a stationary, controlled environment, using the Hella professional calibration rig and specially designed targets that allow the sensor position to be set with the highest accuracy. It is this method that ensures maximum alignment between the vehicle’s electronics and the real environment. However, keep in mind that not all vehicles and their radar systems support static calibration — in some cases a dynamic approach, or a combination of both, is required.

For some cars, such as BMW and Volvo, ADAS system calibration is done differently – right on the road. This approach, called dynamic calibration, allows the sensor to “learn” its environment in real time as the car moves. The calibration process is started at the service center using the Hella Mega Macs X device, connected via the OBD port. Once the software is activated, the driver simply goes for a drive – the system calibrates itself, using the surrounding road conditions as reference points.
