Roof glass replacement or repair: criteria and professional service
In modern vehicles, panoramic glass roofs and glass sunroofs have become a very popular design and comfort element. However, just like the windshield, a car’s roof glazing is exposed to impacts from stones and debris. When a crack or chip appears on the roof surface, the car owner must make an important decision: will a local repair of the defect be enough, or will a complete, professional roof glass replacement be required?
The criteria for determining precisely whether roof glass can be safely repaired or must be replaced are based both on the size of the damage itself and on its location on the glass surface.
When can roof glass be repaired?
Local roof glass repair is technically permissible only under specific conditions strictly defined by the manufacturer:
- If the stone chip is not located in the black (frit) border zone of the glass.
- If the total diameter of the damage and the micro-cracks radiating from it does not exceed the size of a 2-euro coin.
- If the inner glass layer is not affected and the panoramic roof’s supporting frame is not damaged.
If the damage meets safety standards, a professional repair is performed. During the process, air and moisture are completely extracted from the damaged area using specialized vacuum technology, and the crack is then filled under high pressure with top-quality polymer resin, which is subsequently cured with UV light.
Repair zone restrictions: the Tesla Model 3 example
Car manufacturers impose extremely strict safety requirements for restoring roof elements, since the glass roof is part of the vehicle’s load-bearing structure and directly affects the body’s strength and torsional rigidity.
Below is an example from the manufacturer’s official guidelines for the Tesla Model 3, clearly defining where repair is prohibited and where it is allowed.

❌ Zone 1 — Red Zone (repair is NOT allowed)
In this zone, any damage is considered structurally dangerous, as the impact point is too close to the load-bearing body edges. Repair is strictly prohibited if the chip is located:
- A: Less than 50 mm from the front and rear edges of the roof glass.
- B: Less than 253 mm from the left and right (side) edges of the roof glass.
If a stone has struck these perimeter zones, a local repair cannot ensure the structural integrity of the glass, and the only safe alternative is a full glass replacement.
Zone 2 — Green Zone (repair IS allowed)
Local repair is technically permissible and safe only if the damage is located in the central part of the glass (outside the red zone boundaries) and the total chip diameter does not exceed the size of a 2-euro coin.
When roof glass replacement is the only option
If the damage is too large, located in a prohibited zone, or the crack has already had time to spread, only a properly performed roof glass replacement can restore the vehicle’s safety. It is a technologically complex and demanding process that requires specific expertise, top-class materials, and precise technician work.
