Unlike radar systems, camera-based sensors do not by themselves receive direct information about object distance or relative speed \u2013 they capture a &#8220;flat&#8221; two-dimensional image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To determine depth and distance, ADAS driver-assistance systems and their algorithms rely on specific real-world parameters. If these parameters change, the system&#8217;s operation is paralyzed, which is exactly why <strong>windshield camera calibration<\/strong> after any repair is a mandatory safety step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do mono cameras calculate distance and speed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For mono cameras to accurately determine the relative distance and speed of the vehicle driving ahead, the algorithms use two basic methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The scale-based method (motion parallax):<\/strong> As we move, nearby objects visually change their size considerably faster than those in the distance. Driving on a highway, the car ahead slowly transforms from a small dot in the distance into a large object. If the system knows the car&#8217;s own speed, it can calculate the relative distance to the other object. If the image in the camera&#8217;s view grows too quickly, the windshield camera and the ADAS system register a collision risk and trigger a warning or automatic emergency braking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The ground-based method:<\/strong> This algorithm relies on mathematical assumptions about fixed distances \u2013 the camera&#8217;s exact height above the ground and the tires&#8217; contact point with the road. Knowing these values, the system can precisely calculate the distance to any other point on the road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operation of these camera system algorithms is entirely dependent on the camera height and angle specified by the manufacturer. These parameters are usually stored in the vehicle&#8217;s control unit at the end of the factory assembly line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if the camera&#8217;s position changes (even minimally) \u2014 for example, after a collision or body repair \u2014, all the mathematical calculations become incorrect. In such cases, professional <strong>windshield camera calibration<\/strong> is required to feed correct data into the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study: How dangerous is a one-degree misalignment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, researchers analyzed how the effectiveness of camera-based automatic emergency braking (AEB \u2014 Automatic Emergency Braking) systems changes when the sensor is misaligned by just <strong>one degree<\/strong> in vertical tilt (up\/down) or horizontal angle (left\/right).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In real life, a one-degree misalignment is invisible to the naked eye \u2013 it means that one edge of the sensor in its housing has shifted forward or backward by just a millimeter or two. Yet the study&#8217;s results proved critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers tested the maximum speed at which the AEB system could still safely slow the vehicle down to 20\u201330 km\/h (the speed Euro NCAP considers a safe collision threshold at which the risk of serious injury is minimal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results with a moving target (the car ahead is braking):<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Correctly adjusted camera:<\/strong> The AEB system works flawlessly, safely slowing the car even at initial speeds from 60 to 130 km\/h.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1-degree misalignment in vertical tilt:<\/strong> The AEB system <strong>fails completely<\/strong> (does not activate at all).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1-degree misalignment in horizontal angle:<\/strong> System operation is seriously compromised, and it can only partially activate at low speed (up to 50 km\/h).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results with a stationary target (a fully stopped car ahead):<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A one-degree misalignment in horizontal angle substantially reduced the effective braking speed threshold \u2014 down to driving at just <strong>30 km\/h<\/strong>. At higher speeds, the system could not react in time. A misalignment in vertical tilt in this scenario showed a slightly less critical, but still dangerous, drop in effectiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings are also confirmed by a real-world study conducted by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It documented a complete AEB system failure in a situation where the camera had been rotated by <strong>less than one degree<\/strong> and no recalibration was performed afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small changes \u2014 severe consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone involved in the auto repair and collision industry needs to understand: when it comes to ADAS, minimal changes have enormous consequences. As a result of an impact, a sensor only needs to shift by 1 degree for the safety assistants to stop working correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not irreversible \u2013 the sensor angles can be recalibrated. During the procedure, the control unit learns and stores the new physical values, fully restoring factory effectiveness. Specialists who work with ADAS diagnostics every day know that these new angle values appear on the calibration equipment&#8217;s screen once the calibration process has been successfully completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusions: The absence of fault codes does not guarantee safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If precise <strong>windshield camera calibration<\/strong> is not performed after body repair, changes to the chassis geometry, or glass replacement (even though the manufacturer clearly requires it in the instructions), the electronic ADAS safety systems will not work as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most dangerous part is that <strong>in most cases, no fault codes or warning indicators will appear on the car&#8217;s instrument panel<\/strong>. The car will &#8220;think&#8221; the sensor is working correctly and will keep making calculations based on incorrect angles. The absence of faults in diagnostics does not mean the ADAS sensor is ready for operation, and it does not guarantee safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary: Does a one-degree misalignment really affect safety? Yes, studies prove it unequivocally.
